Holiday rental cologne explains: Altstadt Nord
The historic center of Cologne logically forms the center of the cathedral city: a mature city and the districts of Altstadt Nord and Altstadt Süd lie exactly in the center. Graphically, these are then narrowed down by the "Cologne Ring" or deferred to the parts Neustadt North and South. we reported in our article Neustadt Süd this rings. To the east of the district, there is a natural limit to the district Köln-Deutz by the Rhine.
History of "Altstadt Nord"
Here, where it all began: who builds a settlement, which wants to be close to the water and that was otherwise believed in the founding of Colonia Ara Agrippinensium. The old town of Cologne, directly on the Rhine so was the focal point in urban development. Where certainly the -berechtige- question must be asked whether it then could not possibly have been also Deutz! But in many historical traditions are always talking about the area around "Gross St. Martin" and then we also want to follow these instructions. After all, is also located right in the middle of the Cologne Cathedral, which can certainly be seen as a starting point for urban development. And is now not in Deutz ...
Furthermore, we find in this area nor the old town hall, the interesting armory, historically valuable burgher houses and some other churches. A famous tourist attraction is also the ancestral home of 4711, located in the Glockengasse.
Another - location as "Klingelpütz" popularly feature was long in the north of this district: a prison. In many stories and songs from Cologne it is still like and often quoted. However, when the JVA Ossendorf was completed, one has the "Klingelpütz" busted and piled the remains of a small mountain or hill. This is now the Klingelpützpark. On Appelhoffplatz courtyard is ultimately still the EL-DE Haus, which houses the NS Documentation Centre of the City of Cologne. On Appellhof is also still the Finanzgericht Köln and the Administrative Court of Cologne.
In the Old Town North every woman is a new pair of shoes! There, two of the busiest shopping streets are all of Germany! It is the "Hohe Straße" and "Schildergasse". In addition to many major department stores and shoe shops are there numerous restaurants, cafes, and soon the new Apple store on the Schildergasse at number 1! If you arrive by train at Cologne Central Station, then you can get over the "high road" in the further course of the "Schildergasse" and if you follow this, then you reach the Neumarkt.
