Once a year we have New Year's Eve in Cologne for the second time! What, you don't believe this? Ok, we call it the Cologne Lights and have once again created a unique experience in Cologne. Of course right in the city and with the Cologne Cathedral in the background as a dream panorama!

Cologne Lights 2016

Soon in summer it will be that time again. Then there will be a huge party right on the banks of the Rhine and thousands of people will flock to the Rhine to watch a magnificent fireworks display and celebrate in a good mood. Of course, the whole event will also be broadcast on television, but of course the fantastic atmosphere can be felt much more clearly and intensively on site. If you rent one of our holiday apartments in Deutz, then you are right where the action is. The apartment on Siegburger Straße is of course the absolute hit in this case, because you just step outside the front door and then see the fireworks immediately!

This year the Cologne Lights will take place on July 16, 2016!

The Feuererwerk is launched from ships that are directly on the Rhine!

Cologne Lights - Update 2017

Since 2001, a music and fireworks festival has been held in the Rhine metropolis Cologne every year in July, which is one of the largest music-synchronous fireworks displays in all of Europe. The festival, organized by Werner Nolden GmbH from Leverkusen, is based on the model of the “Rhine in Flames”. At this festival, a column of boats and ships going from city to city were shown a new fireworks display in each one. But the idea of fireworks on the Rhine is several years older. As early as 1817, a Cologne newspaper reported on fireworks on the Rhine.

Nowadays, however, the festival is much more accessible to a broad section of the population, in which it is becoming more and more popular every year. The first events take place in the afternoon. A wide range of musical styles can be found on a variety of stages. This supporting program is free for all viewers. In the evening, when it has already gotten dark, the eponymous main event takes place. Several fireworks are set off along the Rhine while a convoy of 60 passenger ships sails along it.

From the Rhine you have by far the best view of the event. From 11:30 p.m. the half-hour main fireworks display begins. What is special about this fireworks display is the synchronicity of the fireworks with the music, which is played over the entire section of the Rhine via loudspeakers. It's almost magical how perfectly the explosions match the beat and mood of the music. Local radio stations also broadcast the music of the event at the same time. Since 2005 there has even been a live broadcast of the WDR on television from 8:15 p.m. However, the TV broadcast cannot be compared to the experience of being there.

It's that time again in July 2017!

This year the 17th Cologne Lights will take place on July 15, 2017. But on the 12th the three-day preparations begin, while 40 pyrotechnicians and dozens of helpers get the fireworks ready to be fired. An “experiment” is planned for this year. For the first time, spectators will be responsible for the music during the main fireworks display. Through the singing, the spectators themselves become a part of the fireworks, as the organization team had wanted for a long time. For this year, 4.7 tons of firecrackers were provided for the main fireworks and another 1.7 tons for the boat convoy welcome fireworks.

The titles for this year's music-synchronized fireworks display were chosen from over 1,400 song suggestions that were submitted. From Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah to Toten Hosen and Viva Colonia, everything in terms of music is included. The songs are chosen so that everyone can sing along without difficulty.

It's worth a visit!

All in all, a short trip to Cologne is recommended for everyone, especially if they can reconcile with the Cologne lights. This folk festival is a huge event for both adults and children, which leaves beautiful memories. The sense of community is greatly strengthened by singing and dancing together and barriers are overcome together instead of creating new ones. For one evening, all the problems and questions of the world fade into the background and you let yourself fall into an enchanting world and just enjoy the moment. You don't have to get a seat on one of the boats in convoy to enjoy this spectacle.
