The Cologne Triangle

On the right side of the Rhine it is the second largest skyscraper! And where is it of course again?! With us in downtown Cologne Deutz! The KölnTriangle was completely completed between 2004 and 2006 and designed by the architects Gatermann and Schossig.

The house is particularly popular because of its great viewing platform, which we always recommend to our Holiday rental cologne guests.

The facts

It is located on the banks of the Rhine in Deutz and its official address is: Hermann-Pünder-Straße. It was completed on September 2nd, 2006. It is currently used mainly as an office building, with gastronomy located downstairs on the ground floor. Among other things, there is the Mongolian restaurant "Mongos".

It is exactly 103.2 meters high and has 29 floors! In order to create a floor area of 65,017 square meters and an enclosed space of 233,707 square meters, construction costs of almost 80 million euros were necessary!

In a direct height comparison with other buildings, it is 8th in the cathedral city and 62nd in all of Germany!

The design

Due to its triangle shape and rounded edges, it closely resembles a Releaux triangle. The Triangle was built together with the LVR Horionhaus and was structurally connected to it.

Genesis

The client was or is the Rheinische Versorgungskassen (RVK), which actually built the Kölntriangle as an investment property and now continue to manage it. In the past, the building was often called the LVR Tower in the press, since the Rhineland Regional Council is also the financial supporter of the RVK.

Controversy about the height

Even UNESCO got involved in the construction work by putting the Cologne Cathedral on the Red List of all endangered World Heritage Sites! And why, because the cathedral should not be influenced by the height of the KölnTriangle or its perception disturbed. And of course the construction project and the height of the building were discussed "up and down" in Cologne politics! The building height even triggered a coalition crisis in the Cologne Council!

The Observation Deck

And now we really come to a highlight of Cologne! The viewing platform on the KölnTriangle. This was opened on September 2nd, 2006 and can be reached via a separate area or a separate entrance. Eight thousand visitors attended the open day and got an idea of this terrific 360-degree view of Cologne.

Today, an elevator takes you comfortably to the highest point of the building. There are only a few steps up to the viewing platform called "Panorama". During our last visit, entry cost about 3-4 euros per person. More than 600,000 visitors have already allowed themselves this great view and taken home a wonderful memory of the cathedral city.

Other tenants in the building

As already mentioned, the high-rise is mainly rented out as an office building. There have been many large tenants in the building in recent years. The following companies and tenants existed or still exist:

  • The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
  • The City of Cologne (Building Management Department)
  • CologneSky
  • The Deutsche Bahn
  • Andersen Tax & legal
  • Flossbach von Stork

Honors and Awards

The building is perceived internationally, which is clear from the presentation of the 2006 "Synthesis - Architect and Industry" innovation award. There was also a nomination in 2008 for the Prime Property Award.
