At that time the lake was created artificially. It consists of several lakes. To the south, Seeberg borders on Chorweiler. Volkhofen / Weiler forms the border to the west. Behind it is the A 57. History

Chorweiler is a new district. The architect Fritz Schumacher had the idea for a "new city" as early as 1922. In 1957 the idea was revived. After the war there was a great housing shortage. They wanted to create a new city for 100,000 people. Here, living, working, trading, leisure and social issues should all be easily connected in terms of transport technology. Chorweiler is composed of the names Chorbusch and Weiler. A 2-3 km wide green area was planned, where you could relax. The skyline should start south with low buildings. The district itself should rise to up to 30 floors.

North of Chorweiler was to be flattened again. The development continues to this day. Heimersdorf and Seeberg are in the south. Chorweiler was built in the 1970s and 1989s. A prefabricated housing estate was created. The largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1972 there were the first residents. A shopping center was added in 1976. The initially planned 100,000 people did not. Instead, there were 40,000 residents and the infrastructure was planned too big . The population density in Chorweiler is relatively large. Some of the skyscrapers have 20 floors.

For better distinction, the streets were named according to certain standards:

  • in Heimersdorf for trees and in Seeberg-Süd for flowers
  • in Seeberg-Nord historical persons from the history of Cologne
  • in Chorweiler center by cities of Europe (e.g. Oslo, Florence)
  • in Chorweiler-Nord after rivers (e.g. Havel, Moldau)
  • in Blumenberg to Bergen (e.g. Langenberg, Vogelsberg)

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is located in Chorweiler. By 2015, Chorweiler's share of migrants was 75%. Every 2nd child comes from a family with Hartz IV.

Urban renewal and redevelopment measures

In the 1980s, the negative effects of failed housing policies came into play. Old apartments were in line with the times. The interior of the city was again attractive as a living space, because it was being renovated. Rents in Chorweiler are relatively low. This is the only reason to move to Chorweiler. The high proportion of foreigners and socially weak residents resulted from this. The district became a social focus. The result was a neglected infrastructure. In 1985 Chorweiler was on the social siding. Therefore, the city council decided to revive the quality of living. Remedial measures were decided. The city dwellers should be involved. Traffic-calmed zones and many parks were created for recreation. A youth center was opened. A self-help group also emerged. From 1989 to 1997 social workers, town planners and architects were employed to open an office in the district. The living situation was improved .

Afterwards, job creation measures were on the program. Chorweiler was struggling with high unemployment . A craft yard developed. Vocational preparation, further training and qualification measures were taken to improve. However, this office was closed in 1996. In 1997 the focus was on child and youth work with social workers. Leisure and educational offers were created. The Aqualand leisure pool was opened as an attraction in Chorweiler. The City Center, a shopping center, also came into being.

Children's birthday in Aqualand

06/18/2018 - My son Luca wanted to celebrate a children's birthday in Aqualand and so today we drove with two cars from Erftstadt to Aqualand in Chorweiler. Here is a small report with my impressions.

The journey

As already mentioned, we came by car and left the A1 motorway in Cologne Niehl (exit 100). I expected that there would be a simple and obvious signage on site ... But I was probably wrong or I did not see the signage. Unfortunately, I was missing large and easily recognizable signs on the way to Aqualand. But thanks to Navi, we have arrived!

Parking situation

In front of Aqualand there is a small parking lot, which leads to a huge, second parking lot. So there are enough parking spaces.

Entrance area

The entrance area is designed like in all other indoor pools: cash register, shop for swimwear and a cafe area. Furthermore, I have probably recognized a fitness area. The ladies at the checkout were very friendly and even recommended the best group rate for this birthday party. That was very nice and is particularly positive.

Changing area

The changing area was large enough and had enough lockers. But already here I got the first impression that there was a small renovation backlog. Because the ceiling area was torn open and the damage had not been repaired. We saw something similar later in the men's shower: here too there was probably damage to any pipes that ran along the ceiling, because the suspended ceiling had also been opened there. Unfortunately, the damage has not been remedied here either.

The bathroom

A large hall, with four or five whirlpools in the middle of the hall. An open restaurant area, and a large TV or rather a glue wall on the wall to the hall with the slides. The games of the World Cup ran there, which of course was very practical.

Here, too, I noticed the renovation backlog directly: the support structure of the glass dome was no longer really new and had rusted in many places. The tiles and edges in the basins also looked old and worn. The joints were yellow and there was even tile damage. There was occasional rust on the tile walls.

Oxygen therapy pelvis

A separate area was called "Oxygen Therapy Pool" or something. The sign read: "You feel good with the fizzy water and much younger and fresher after a stay in the pool". I thought it would be great to use it. Unfortunately, the stairs led into a dark concrete room, which was not really comfortable. The plaster on the walls was obviously chipped off, since iron parts were processed in the concrete that are now rusting. Due to the rust, the paint is off or whole pieces were just broken and rusted. Here too, unfortunately, the renovation backlog. The constant suction noises of the sewage pipes annoyed me so that I gave up the advertised wellness and rejuvenation treatment relatively early.

The adventure grotto

Hui, what can that be? I wanted to take a look at this grotto, but unfortunately I was disappointed here too. A staircase led down to a concrete chamber, which housed a small (free) steam sauna and stone benches. Overall, I didn't feel comfortable down there and left the gloomy chamber right away.

The slides

A hall completely full of the best slides! That was especially great for the kids and is probably the biggest magnet for Aqualand! Great slides in all conceivable variants lure here with a great water adventure. Thumbs up, because the children were thrilled and the facilities still looked good.

The whirlpools in the middle of the main hall

The pools, which can be reached via a small staircase in the middle of the main hall, didn't look particularly fresh. With small roofs above, they should invite you to relax. But if I interpreted the sign correctly, which was directly on the pools, some people don't come here to relax ?! The sign read: " Physical tenderness , which goes beyond just kissing, is prohibited !" Hey, what's going on here? And yes, despite the sign, there were a couple who apparently ... liked each other.

Conclusion

The children had fun with the slides and were busy, but for me it was rather nothing ... It seemed rather unsanitary to me due to the renovation backlog and I didn't really feel relaxed or relaxed when we returned to the bathroom have left.
