Cologne district Dünnwald

Dünnwald belongs to the Mülheim district in Cologne and has an area of 10.85 km² and approximately 11,599 inhabitants. The incorporation of thin forest took place on April 1, 1914.

Dünnwald

Location of the district

Dünnwald borders east of Bergisch Gladbach, south of Dellbrück and Höhenhaus , west of Flittard and north to Leverkusen.

History

The name Dünnwald either derives from the river Dhünn or is named after a Rhine dune. The St. Nicholas Monastery was built in 1117. In 1122 the parish law followed and in that year the village of Dünnwald was founded. In 1143 the Premonstratensian women settled here. They came from the Steinfeld monastery in the Eifel. The place was first documented in 1230 with reference to the manor house Haan. The place belonged politically to the Porz office since the Middle Ages. Dünnwald was plundered by the Truchsessian War on August 13, 1583 and burned down completely. Thin Forest was devastated even during the Thirty Years' War. The Haan house was destroyed by fire in 1628.

The French

In 1635, the district was looted by Hessian troops. The French occupied Thin Forest between 1795 and 1801 . Dünnwald came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 and was previously part of the Rhine Department. In 1869, the "Kaiser & Edelmann" explosives factory was founded in Manfort due to industrialization. In 1870 there was an explosion and 15 workers lost their lives. The factory was founded in 1872 by the "Alfred Nobel and Co." taken over and the company was expanded. The company was then called the Schlebusch plant because the train station was next to it. In 1878, a factory was built that produced Berliner Blau, Salmiak and Soda.

Dünnwalder Whitsun Singing

From 1900 children and young people formed themselves for singing Pentecost. The choir was called "Dünnwalder Pengsjonge" and a tradition developed from it. The singing group goes from house to house on Pentecost Saturday, sings songs and for that the children get a small amount of money or food. The marching band of the Dünnwald volunteer fire brigade continued this tradition from 1931. From 1965 to 1985 the singing tradition was discontinued, but reintroduced in 1985. The male choir of the Pfarr-Cäcilien-Verein revived the tradition.

Monastery courtyard and St. Nicholas Church

In 1117 the monastery courtyard and the St. Nicholas basilica were built by Benedictines. From 1143 it was taken over by Premonstratensian choir women from the Steinfeld monastery and continued. The basilica is dedicated to Mary and St. Nicholas. The church was built in the 12th century and is built in a Romanesque style. More conversions and extensions were added. A few Gothic murals have been preserved and are beautiful. An altarpiece dates from the 16th century. A radiation monstrance of around 1700 also belongs to the church. In 1643 there were only three nuns because there were several wars. The monastery was then converted into a male monastery. The monastery was cared for and managed by the canons from Steinfeld. Secularization occurred in 1803 and since then the church has been a parish church.

Streets in Thin Forest

So that you can find your way around Dünnwald quickly and easily, here is a small overview of the best-known and largest streets (along with important information) from Cologne-Dünnwald:

  • Berliner Strasse (Berliner Strasse is the main business street that leads across Thin Forest). On this street you will find many shops (Aldi, banks, bakers, doctors, so everything about everyday life) and also access to public transport. This street is one of the most important streets in Dünnwald
  • Leuchterstrasse: It goes off Berliner Strasse and leads towards the Waldbad Dünnwald. The stop for line number 4 and the bus stop "Leuchterstrasse" are also called.
  • "Am Klosterhof" is certainly also a very important place or an important street, because many church activities take place here. St. Nikolaus Church is located at Gut Klosterhof!
  • "Am Porzenacker" is also a very important street or place for families in the district. Because there you will find the kindergarten and primary school in Dünnwald. The children's home is also located there. So here at this point a lot is done for a good education of the youth.
  • I would consider Odenthaler Strasse as the upper foothill of Berliner Strasse and this also leads east towards Waldbad or rather towards Schildgen. Odenthaler Straße is connected to Leuchterstraße via the Dünnwalder Mauspfad.
  • The street "Am Wildpark" does not have to be explained separately, since this name is also self-explanatory. However, it must be pointed out here that this road is not located directly at the wildlife park, but rather extends there.
  • It may be interesting for all horse lovers that the "Birkenhof Riding Stables" and the "Rodderhof Riding and Driving Club eV" can be found on the small street "Am Oderweg"!

Wildpark Dünnwald

It's green and beautiful here! And there is a lot to see. You can see many animals and that is why the wildlife park is particularly popular with families with small children. The following animals are in the park:

  • Fallow
  • Boar
  • European bison (has already died out in the wild!)
  • mouflon

The forester also organizes tours and then explains everything important about the respective animal species. Such a tour always takes place at 2 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The start is at the following position: Kalkweg / Dünnwalder Mauspfad, of course on the wildlife park side.

Entry

Admission is free and that's why the park is certainly an attractive destination for school lessons. The forester also organizes group tours! Other game parks throughout Germany can also be found here .
