The Heumarkt: central square in Cologne

Everyone knows the Haymarket in Cologne , as it is one of the most famous squares in Cologne city center. Once upon a time there was a swamp and today every year dorr rages the carnival ! This was found during excavations of the Roman-Germanic Museum when they were looking for Roman finds! In order to be able to use the central place meaningfully, it was put dry in the Middle Ages - with much work.

The central location

Due to its central location, the Heumarkt was ideally suited for a marketplace. Immediately it was traded on it. In 1492, a grain scale was set up and immediately the place established itself as the main trading post for hay ! This explains the name Heumarkt. In addition to the hay but were also traded goods such as meat, cheese or other usd so there were many sellers and buyers. There was also a historical event on the square, namely the historic Cologne Weber Uprising which took place there in 1371.

The Place in Transition

In the year 1580 the Cologne stock exchange was built and immediately the place got a new task. Over the next 150 years, the Heumarkt has become a central place for classical money trading in Cologne. But not only the economy discovers the Heumarkt for itself, no, also the culture! In 1757, the first theatrical performance took place at Heumarkt in a building specially built for this purpose. The square gained a new meaning in 1904 with the newly built main market hall. On the square is still a very impressive statue: it is the equestrian statue of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. , who sits there impressively on his horse. The statue was inaugurated in 1878 and duly celebrated. Further conversions took place and so the Heumarkt was again completely transformed up to the year 1910. Directly in front of the Reiterdenkmal is the driveway to the Deutzer bridge.

Further improvements

At the end of the 90s, the Heumarkt was again upgraded or further developed and improved. In order to be able to cope with the high volume of traffic, for example, an underground car park with approximately 450 parking spaces was built. Naturally one tried to preserve the old historical character of the Hay Market. Therefore, among other things, the cobblestones in many places again renewed and built. Of course, there is always a lot going on at Heumarkt in Cologne, as it is such a central place. Many tourists visit the old town of Cologne in search of sociability, the Kölsch joie de vivre and the Kölsch! Of course, everyone will pass this place once! In the summer there is a lot going on. All restaurants have a nice outside catering and on this historic place comes naturally in the evening a really great atmosphere. If you want to experience Cologne and perhaps also enjoy watching uncountable numbers of passing people and tourists, you will definitely get their money's worth there!
