The story

And there are indeed a lot of stories and assumptions about how the name of the district came about. Was it from "am Nippes" (ie from the name "am Nipp-Haus") or rather from Nipp for "Niep" (a sink that is damp). Because today's Nippeser Tälchen was still recognizable as a pond in the 19th century and was once an old arm of the Rhine. At that time there was also a lot of agriculture in the fertile area. Excavations from old courtyards and houses confirmed this assumption.

At that time there were some courtyards in the "Herrlichkeit Mauenheim", such as the "Altenberger Hof". The first historical mention of the place took place in 1549.

Another little anecdote is the popularity of Nippes due to the serving of the bottom-fermented beer that was not permitted at the time. The breweries were full!

After a back-and-forth and the final demerger from the Mayor's Office of Longerich, Nippes was then incorporated and connected to the cathedral city with a horse-drawn railway line and a railway connection.

Cologne city center gave no space and no permission for a settlement of industry and therefore many companies settled in Nippes. The following companies should be mentioned here:

The carnival is particularly important in this district. With the " Nippeser Bürgerwehr " you will find an absolute traditional body of the Cologne Carnival. The street carnival is big and beautiful here.
