Ferienwohnung-Koeln.com tip

Ferienwohnung-Koeln.com recommends a visit to the Volkspark. Just nice and green and relaxing. And of course Carnival is also celebrated in Raderthal, as this video shows!

Management and Industry

In the Middle Ages, the area was cultivated almost exclusively by farmers who all found a place to stay in St. Severin in the church district. So in 1384 the Farmer's Bank Severin was created. In the 19th century, industry found its way and the poor farmers had to leave their farms behind and relocate.

Immediately after the Second World War, a so-called "English settlement" was built in the area, which is in the immediate vicinity of the "Fritz-Encke-Volkspark". Today it is a listed building. Beautiful wide streets and a large, old stock of trees made the streets an attractive residential area. For this reason, the federal government was able to sell the houses very quickly on the free housing market .

Located directly on the Cologne green belt

Raderthal is located directly on the "Cologne Green Belt" . Here is the story ... It is ultimately thanks to the military caution of the former Cologne city fathers in the Middle Ages that the forbidden development outside the city walls left enough space for the fortifications in the early 19th century and thus also enough space for the development of the green belt 1922 left. The fortress rings built under Prussian rule between 1816 and 1881 were almost completely demolished after the First World War under the Treaty of Versailles.

The then mayor of Cologne and later Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer ensured that, contrary to the plans of the English occupiers, the facilities were not completely demolished and the area lay fallow, but gradually with green areas and a park - and sports facilities could be built on. The extensive work served as a most welcome job creation measure for numerous returning soldiers. In some cases, private land was also expropriated for the green belt. The remaining remains of the outer and inner fortress ring were successfully integrated into the park and green areas in urban planning and can still be visited today. Fort Paul in Volksgarten and Fort X on Neusser Wall are still clearly recognizable.

The original plan to design the green belt without gaps and continuously, however, could not be fully implemented due to the existing development with residential houses, administrative buildings and railway lines. The inner green belt between the banks of the Rhine in the Cologne-Riehl district stretches for seven kilometers without interruption only to Luxemburger Strasse. In the adjacent Volksgarten, the railway lines to Bonn and the Südbrücke clearly cross the green belt. The fortress terraces in the Friedenspark on Hans-Abraham-Ochs-Weg in Neustadt-Süd, where the former Fort I is also located, are recognizable as a continuation.

The geometrically laid out paths of the former fortress are also clearly recognizable around the university as well as on Aachener Straße and Aachener Weiher in the Hiroshima-Nagasaki-Park opened in 2004. In Neustadt-Nord between Hansaring and Innere Kanalstraße there are also August-Sander-Park, Lis-Böhle-Park on Niehler Straße, Lentpark, Johann-Giesberts-Park on Amsterdamer Straße and the grounds of the Cologne Zoo on Riehler Straße to the inner green belt. The Alhambrapark between Merheimer Platz and Escher Straße in Cologne-Nippes and the Carola-Williams-Park between Aachener and Vogelsanger Straße are also included.

Even more green

On the right bank of the Rhine belong the Rheinpark between Deutz and Mülheim as well as the Deutz Stadtgarten not far from the Deutz Jewish cemetery on the Judenkirchhofsweg to the inner green belt. The less clearly recognizable outer green belt on the right bank of the Rhine includes various cemeteries, allotment gardens as well as sports facilities and park areas. Above all, the 150 hectare Merheimer Heide between the districts of Buchheim and Holweide as well as Merheim and Höhenberg is an intensively used local recreation area with numerous sports areas. Even on the left bank of the Rhine, the outer green belt is not immediately recognizable as such from a bird's eye view.

The course is quite clear, however, between the banks of the Rhine and the districts of Rodenkirchen, Marienburg, Raderthal, Klettenberg and Zollstock along the federal highway 4 and the federal highway 51 in the south-west of Cologne. There is also the Kalscheurer Weiher, which is particularly popular in summer and which many visitors like to visit with rental boats. Further to the east are the Fritz-Encke-Volkspark, which is no less popular as a leisure and recreation area, as well as the Südpark and the Forest Botanical Garden and Friedenswald on Friedrich-Ebertstraße. In Klettenberg a railway line interrupts the green belt, if you follow the military ring road in the direction of Sülz, you will find the Cologne rugby park there, the Beethoven park and the Rhein-Energiepark.

Worth seeing attractions in the forest botanical garden are the rhododendron gorge, the rock garden and the nearby Cologne fortress museum. The peace forest, which is a good 20 hectares in size, was largely laid out on war rubble. The same applies to the so-called Pilzberg in Beethoven Park, which offers a beautiful view of the surroundings and is often used for tobogganing in winter. In the 40 hectare park there is also the Volkswiese, which is often used by the population for social gatherings of all kinds. The training grounds of 1. FC Köln are located in the Rhein-Energiepark. The approximately 20 hectare Decksteiner Weiher to the west is an equally popular meeting point.

Leisure activities include a boat rental and a mini golf course as well as the fitness trail on Berrenrather Straße. Further north on the former military ring is the 200 hectare Lindenthal Zoo on Kitschburger Strasse. The zoo, which is open all year round, offers free entry, and there are over 250 animals from local breeds to be seen. To the north-west is the Rhein-Energiestadion, the venue of 1. FC Köln, in the neighborhood is the nationally and internationally renowned German Sport University Cologne. In the further course between the districts of Müngersdorf, Vogelsdorf and Bickendorf there is little green. However, the 520,000 m² West Cemetery begins at the Bocklemünd underground station, where numerous war dead have found their final resting place.

Already far away

The wetland Große Laache is only partially in the Cologne city area and thus also in the outer green belt, west of the federal motorway 1.While this largely belongs to the neighboring town of Pulheim in the Rhein-Erft district, the 73 hectare nature reserve Baadenberger Senke and Stöckheimer See is located usually counted as part of the Cologne green belt. The approximately 28 hectare Escher lakes in the Esch / Auweiler district are also part of it, the two former quarry ponds have been popular bathing waters since the late 1980s. The Olof-Palme-Park at the Merianstraße and the green spaces between Neusser Landstraße and Mercatorstraße are included in the green belt.

To the east of federal highway 9, the local recreation area Fühlinger See offers high recreational value. There is a regatta course that is often used for competitions. Concerts and music festivals are often held at the lake. Depending on the exact layout, observers and experts also include the Chorbusch forest in the Roggendorf / Thenhoven district, the Rheinaue Worringen-Langel and the Worringer Bruch as part of the green belt. On the other hand, the affiliation of the almost 250 hectare Rheinaue Langel-Merkenich on the left bank of the Rhine is quite undisputed. On the right bank, the Hitdorfer Laach is a locally popular leisure area.

The 1,000 km² Rhineland Nature Park in the west of Cologne and Bonn is sometimes referred to as the third green belt in Cologne. The area is accessible to tourists, for example from the Erft cycle path, the Kaiser route and the moated castle route. Sights include the amusement park “Phantasialand” near Brühl, the ruins of the Tomburg from the 9th century near Rheinbach and the 260 hectare Marienfeld near Frechen, which is much visited because of its numerous hiking trails. The Belvedere landscape park between Bocklemünd and Müngersdorf .

serves as a link between Cologne's green belt and the nature park
