Historical development

The old Marterberg execution site is probably responsible for the name Raderberg as the godfather. Allegedly, a certain Count Friedrich was tied to a wheel here in 1225 and was tortured as a punishment for killing Cologne's Archbishop Engelbert. And the word mountain and bike and it happened ... In 1174, the provost at the time, Konrad von Blankenheim, leased the area to the city's Jews. Among other things, they then built the Jewish cemetery there.

Raderberg has been part of the Brühl office of the then Electorate of Cologne since the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, some wars and unrest followed in the region, for example in 1794 when some French revolutionary groups crossed the Rhineland and the Mairie Rondorf was proclaimed, which was in the so-called Canton Brühl of the Arrondissement de Cologne. In 1815 the Wars of Liberation took place and then Raderberg again belonged to the mayor's office of Rondorf in the Cologne district. Raderberg officially became a district of the beautiful city of Cologne in 1888. The neighboring towns of Mannsfeld and Arnoldshöhe simply merged into the Raderberg district or were swallowed up by the.
Since 1975 the Rodenkirchen district has added a new district, namely Raderberg.

Economy and Industry

In addition to the DuPont and Löring industrial sites, there are or were a number of large car dealerships and suppliers in the town. They determined the appearance of the village and only with the relocation and conversion of these areas does the area slowly develop into a residential area. The still resident Cologne wholesale market will move towards Cologne Marsdorf in 2020 and this will lead to a further "de-management" of this area. Raderberg is increasingly turning into a residential area and, with the connection to the Stadtbahn by the Cologne transport company, can also be reached by public transport. Before that there was still a bus driving here.

Report on the Cologne wholesale market

The wholesale market in Cologne is one of the largest markets in Germany and is located in the Raderberg district in the southern part of the city. It guarantees customers a fresh and varied range. There are over 200 companies on the site that offer goods from all over the world. The more than 5000 customers include, for example, restaurants, hotels, bulk consumers (such as old people's homes or hospitals) or food retailers. Private individuals are excluded from the sale. The goods on offer come from different regions. The sellers get some from the surrounding area and another part comes from the Frankfurt area. However, the largest percentage of goods sold comes from abroad. Around 300,000 tons of goods are sold here every year. Most of the work in the wholesale market takes place at night. The market is open from midnight to 2 p.m. and every day except Sundays.

The past markets

The "Cologne Market" existed in Cologne over a thousand years ago. The old market is mentioned for the first time in a document in 922, at that time under the name "mercatus coloniae". 38 years later it can be found in the books as a "forum" which means market. It grew steadily and moved from today's Alter Markt to Heumarkt. In the latter, the old market street can still be seen today. With the introduction of a new district, the market was divided into two parts. Around 1250, the southern part of the Alter Markt received its current name Heumarkt, Latin for "forum feni" (feni means hay). At the beginning of the 20th century, the Cologne wholesale market opened its doors at what is now the “Hotel Maritim”. Sellers could offer their goods here on over 7000 square meters. The hall consisted of three aisles and asked the railways and trams, due to a siding, access. The market was open until mid-1940. The location turned out to be impractical, so the sellers moved to a new location and the old hall closed its doors.

Today's wholesale market

Mayor Schmidt broke ground in October 1936. The topping-out ceremony took place three years later. At that time, the site had 78,000 square meters. The vaulted house was over 130 meters long, had a span of 57 meters and a crown height of around 20 meters. The hall has a basement and the cooling cellar is located here. The hall started operating towards the end of 1940. The new wholesale market also has a connection to the Cologne-Bonntor train station. The site has been expanded over the years and now has a market area of over 230,000 square meters. The building has been a listed building since 1989.

The future wholesale market

The economic committee of the city council has decided that the wholesale market will get a new location and move from Cologne-Raderberg to Cologne-Marsdorf. An area of over 50 hectares is available here. Originally, the schedule foresaw a move by the end of December 2019. For various reasons, however, the move has been postponed for some time. At the beginning of 2018, it looks like the wholesale store will only move in 2023. The current hall should be cleared in mid-2024. Repair measures are required so that operations in Raderberg can run smoothly by then. The costs for this are estimated at around three million euros. Plans for the building that is currently still in use are already in place; it is to be completely redesigned.

Other use

The vegetable auction hall is no longer used for the wholesale market. Various events have been taking place here since 2007. After a restoration, the building shines in new splendor and houses two event rooms. In a special atmosphere and in a quiet location during the day, it offers plenty of space for a wide variety of events. From weddings to various celebrations (birthdays, Christmas ...) to conference venues.
