The popular promontory park

The Vorgebirgspark is an r and 14 hectare park in the south of the urban area of Cologne. The park is located between the suburbs of Raderberg, Zollstock and Veedel Raderthal and was built between 1910 and 1914. It was finally opened on July 1, 1914. The park was created or designed by garden architect Fritz Encke, who was the royal horticultural director and urban garden director of his time. He designed many parks and squares in Cologne.

Through the ages

The foothills park is embedded in the green axis south, which connects the Volksgarten with the outer green belt. The latter in turn links the Meschenich nature reserve, the local duck fishing area and the open landscapes between the Rhine and the foothills to Bonn. This also includes smaller parks in Cologne such as the green area at the south cemetery and the connection to the Fritz-Encke-Volkspark, the former Volkspark Raderthal or also called Volkspark. Unfortunately, these green areas were strongly influenced by urban development in the 1950s. Once the park was provided with clearly defined boundaries, it gradually disappeared towards the west through flowing lawns and subsequent forest plantings.

The old border can only be recognized by the old trees. In addition, the road layout surrounding the west was removed. However, its original limitation can still be found in the south and east - directly located on Kreuznacher and Neuenahrer Straße. Even today you can admire special gardens that are delimited with an old brick wall. Most of this facility was to be demolished in the mid-1980s, as a highway road was planned. However, the plans were rejected again, and the park was renovated and replanted.

Garden architecture of the foothills park

At the entrance on Kreuznacher Straße there is a square and square with elms, which looks like a hallway of a house . From here you can go to the other parts of the park. To the west you will find a spacious open space that extends across the entire width of the park. This extensive meadow was formerly used as a public people's and playground. From here you come to a crossroads from where you can leave the park towards the west. Seen transversely, there are three special gardens on the side that are grouped and laid out on one axis.

The first garden

The first garden was planted in terraces. Formerly there was a gate in the beech hedge that still runs around the garden today - at that time it was the only access to the terrace garden. The garden itself has recessed lawns in the middle, which are accessed by two intersecting paths. At the crossing point there is a round bed bordered with stone. Originally this was a fountain . The lowered area is bordered by a half-high stone wall, previously this was additionally lined with perennials that continued along the way outside the wall. Along this path, which leads around the terraced lawns, there are regularly planted yew trees on the long side, which are interrupted by four stone bases. Originally there were small sculptures on the bases.

Towards Kreuznacher Straße, the garden is delimited by a narrow green line, which is provided with linden trees in a kind of avenue. Here you will also find a number of benches that are particularly popular with walkers. On the other long side towards the park, the garden is shielded by a hedge that used to be lined with a picket fence. There are also several benches here, which are primarily intended to serve as family seating. On the narrow side of the garden to the north there used to be a semicircular arbor, overgrown with ivy and divided into individual niches. There were tables and chairs. Unfortunately, this arcade is no longer available today. Rough conclusions can only be drawn from the circular route.

The second garden

The second special garden is a rose garden. The rectangular and 42 m long pond rose basin, which is located in the center of the garden, is characteristic. Due to its turquoise background, it stands out from the surroundings. In the past, this basin was lined on the left and right by trunk and polyanthus. According to the Kölner Tageblatt of September 14, 1911 there were over a hundred varieties of roses that were sorted by color. They were planted in rows or climbed over iron rose arches and wooden railings. Unfortunately, none of this can be seen today. Towards the street, the garden is bordered with an archway painted white, which used to continue as a companionway in the third garden, the perennial garden. There was an arbor towards the tree place. On the long side towards the park there are four seats, which are lined with trellises and hedges. In the southern area of the rose garden, two stairs lead to a small tree space that is planted with linden trees. From here you can also get to the neighboring third special garden, the perennial garden.

In the past there were long discounts with an abundance of flowers that bloomed in different color combinations from spring to autumn. The edge was lined with a cut hedge, on the street side you could walk through the above-mentioned corridor. Several seating niches were embedded in the aisle. Unfortunately, the perennial garden is very neglected today. Where there used to be small paths that led around square aquatic plant basins, today there is ordinary lawn that overgrown everything over time. Only in autumn, when the leaves collect in the troughs, can you begin to see the original routes.

To the south of the perennial garden are trees planted in a semicircle, which are intended to replicate the arcade in the north of the first garden. At the outer tip in the south there is a slightly elevated place that is shaded by four trees. Because of its originality, which it still has compared to the other places in the park, it is considered the most picturesque and beautiful place in the foothill park.

Reason for the establishment of the park

With the three special gardens, Fritz Encke (according to Heinz Wiegand in his work on "Urban green in Germany between 1890 and 1925") wanted to address those people who did not have their own garden. The rest of the more landscaped park, on the other hand, should aim to promote the growing interest in sports and games. Public hygiene and social views should also be promoted. Last but not least, he wanted to provide a large number of visitors with freely usable space for outdoor activities. From today's perspective, the Vorgebirgspark was a modern people's park at that time.

The foothill park today

Today you can still find the Volks- und Spielwiese mentioned above in the west and the children's playground, which is shaded by gigantic trees, in the south of the park. In the north there is the concrete wading pond, which was modeled on the American "wading pools". The basin for this still exists today. A smaller version is also available in the Stadtgarten in Cologne. This basin is around 40 cm deep in the middle and becomes flatter on the outside.
There used to be a sandbar around the pond, for which the soil was excavated 75 cm deep under Encke's management. There were shady trees around it, in between there was a small shelter that served as a changing room for the children. At that time, the wading pond was a main attraction of the foothill park, because people could escape the big city atmosphere on sunny days and instead make themselves comfortable on the man-made beach. Today there is a basketball court instead of the beach, the shelter has completely disappeared.

Nevertheless, the park still offers its attractions for children, families, animal lovers and athletes . Some schools and kindergartens have settled on the edge of the foothill park, as have sports and swimming clubs. In addition to the large children's playground mentioned above, the park also has small play areas. A barbecue area is also available. Dog lovers will find a spacious dog run area in Zollstock.
The Robert Schmidt Weg leads north through the forest of the park, where a true natural paradise has developed in the Radeberger Brache. Several foot and bike paths lead through the entire park.

History and name derivation

First mentioned in 1877 and previously only consisting of fields, the name arose from a customs house (Zollstock) located at the time. It stood at an important intersection between the dirt roads and the bishop's path that runs to Cologne.
