The story of Sülz

The name of this district is derived from a front courtyard , namely from the front courtyard "Sulpece". It was first mentioned in 1145 as "Villa Sultz". The farm was run as a winery. Unfortunately, the courtyard was destroyed in 1474 for security reasons, because the city of Cologne did not tolerate the possibility of covering any building outside the city wall in the so-called "Neuss War". In 1487 the old farm or what was left of it was rebuilt as V "illa Nova". The district of Sülz and its areas at the time were mainly used for sand or gravel pits, some brick factories and poudrette factories (i.e. fertilizers, due to the lack of sewers). Afterwards there was a large settlement of trade and industry in Sülz. The following goods were produced:

  1. bread
  2. straw hats
  3. bodice
  4. fishing
  5. paints
  6. Arc lamps
  7. furniture
  8. tobacco processing machines
  9. Motorcycles
  10. cars
  11. bicycles

... and many more were manufactured there in various factories. Of course, this also leads to a large population influx, and so in the end, many residential buildings and residential complexes were built with beautiful squares and green spaces

streets, squares and green areas

In Sülz there are a lot of beautiful places that you have to discover for yourself. The "Neuenhöfer Allee", which has a great, old stock of trees, should be mentioned as a particularly beautiful street. Particularly beautiful "green places" are the following, which we simply want to list here briefly:

  1. Asbergplatz
  2. Manderscheider Platz
  3. Nikolausplatz
  4. Auerbachplatz
  5. Hermeskeiler Platz
  6. Beethovenpark
  7. Allotment garden climbing rose
  8. Decksteiner Weiher
Zuelpicher Straße
The Zülpicher Straße also goes through Sülz

The Beethovenpark in Cologne

The Beethovenpark in Cologne , like numerous other parks, was created in the 1920s. It extends between Neuenhöfer Allee and the military ring and is therefore on the southwestern edge of the district of Sülz . You can really relax in this 40ha green park. Here you can find relaxation for young and old.

The history of the Beethovenpark

The Beethovenpark was created when garden architect Fritz Encke designed many parks in Cologne (1903-1926). At the same time the empire fell and Prussian fortifications were abandoned. Between 1921 and 1923 the inner green belt was created, which was designed by city architect Fritz Schumacher. The mayor Konrad Adenauer had him brought in to redesign the fortress belt, but due to the war and the lack of money, the planned projects could only be partially carried out. The green belt was created instead of the fastening belt.

Wilhelm Arntz became his successor and completed the green system. In 1928, Schumacher's designs resulted in an overall plan for the green belt, which still serves as the basis for many reasons. The planned greening of the city failed when the city motorway was expanded in the 1950s to 1970s and new residential areas and industrial areas were built. In the 1980s, environmental disasters increased, changing the awareness of nature and parks were listed as historical monuments and the expansion of the motorway was stopped. Protected areas developed. To this day there is always discussion about whether road construction or greening should be promoted.

Description of the park

The two-part basic structure of the park has remained until today. We have the special gardens on the one hand and a landscape part on the other. Different groups of trees structure the large Volkswiese. In 1953, a mountain of rubble was filled up in the east, so that trees and paths would be buried.

special gardens

At Neuenhöfer Allee is the entrance to the park in the form of rows of trees. There are three lawns across the Neuenhöfer Allee. Playgrounds border the first lawn and get their shade from old tall trees. The second lawn area catches the eye due to the beautiful poplar wreath. A rose garden had been created on the right and left next to it, which was abolished in the 1990s. A continuous hedge adjoins this area, which provides relaxation and a breather thanks to benches. South of the poplar wreath you will find the so-called "Sülzer Balkon" . From here you can enjoy the view of the varied park. The view to the other side reveals the tower of the Sülzer Orphanage Church.

The Volkswiese

On the edge of a former gravel pit is the Volkswiese west of Trümmerberg. The meadow is adorned by groups of trees that immediately catch the eye. To the south, there is a ring of conifers.

The mountain of rubble

During the Second World War, the city of Cologne would be destroyed dramatically and a lot of 30 million cubic meters of bulk . The protection would then be delivered where there was free space and later tipped over. In this way, new hills were created and patio doors so that the slopes did not slip. Lawns were planted and fast-growing trees were planted, like poplars. The greening ended in 1960 and eleven hills were created in this way. So also the Trümmerberg in Beethovenpark in Cologne. This slope is often used for sledding in winter.

Apartment Cologne Tip!

Absolutely a visit to the Decksteiner pond is a must ! It is so beautiful and invites you to great walks under the chestnut avenue. In winter the pond is mostly completely frozen (if it is really cold for a few days!) And then the people of Cologne just like to ice skate there. A great pleasure.

Prominence from Sülz

The district "spat out" some well-known personalities: The most popular is probably Stefan Raab, whose parents ran a butcher shop there. Also worth mentioning: Franz Schneider and Peter Müller.

Hotels and pensions and holiday apartments

So directly in Sülz we actually only noticed two hotels , which, however, don't seem inviting due to their low star rating: Hotel Ariana and Hotel Lamti (both only 2 stars). We found a guest house in Birresborner Strasse, which belongs more to the district of Lindenthal. Ultimately, we don't want to advertise the competition, but would be much more pleased if you book your Cologne Accommodation with us! Request your non-binding offer now, for your stay in the city center directly on the Rhine!
