History

There is the so-called Maternus legend: A legend that came up in the Middle Ages says that the cities of Cologne, Trier and Tongern argued about the possible place of burial after the death of Cologne Bishop Maternus! The cities were all bishops' seats and now all claimed their bishop. In this context, the term "Ruwerkirch" or "Ruenkirchen" was mentioned for the first time.

Trier received the funeral after the judgment of God and the place where the boat with the body of the bishop went ashore was said to be a burial site. A chapel was built there and therefore the place was given the name "Ruwenkirch" ("Ruwe" then stands for repentance). The Maternus Chapel still stands there today, although it is not sufficiently certain that it is actually the said chapel.

The TOPPICS pop-up museum

For the young Selfie Generation there was a special opportunity in Cologne Rodenkirchen at the end of March 2020. The Selfie Museum TOPPICS opened its doors there. Anyone who wanted to present their Instagram followers with a new, great picture could do so in a great setting! Whether retro or breathtaking Grand Canyon backdrop: there was something for everyone! The stage builders have built 20 fantastic settings and so the influencer of tomorrow could be photographed with the following background, among other things: pink 69er Cadillac, 200 squeaky ducks, prison cell, private jet or a flower swing including a blossom forest! The Kunstmueseum can be found at Weißer Str. 143 (Rodenkirchen) and, according to the website https://www.toppics.studio/, has also been open since May 9, 2020. Have fun shooting!

ATM blown up!

There was probably a big bang when criminals blew up an ATM directly at an adjacent arcade in February 2020 and then "escaped". Around 3:40 in the morning, the security guard called the police and reported the explosion. This explosion blew up the ATM, which was embedded in the outer facade of the building. The force of the detonation not only destroyed the ATM, but also the facade and the front door of the arcade. According to witnesses, the blast was caused by 2 people, who then fled with a small red car.

B8lich has closed

A great concept store has unfortunately closed its business : the shop with the great name "B8lich" was opened by Angelika Zalbertus seven years ago and has so far successfully sold unique things in Rodenkirchen. But that's over since February 22nd, 2020! None: bottles with vinegar and oil, no mango or cranberry vinegar and no more walnut or lemon oil. There was also: magnificent jewelry, wonderful decorative items, home accessories, room scents, exclusive bags, great art, or particularly high-quality delicacies and wonderful gift baskets. Ultimately, economic reasons made the business task inevitable. If the customers fail to appear, even though the greatest effort is made, it is the Rodenkircheners own fault. Another shop less, just because you sit lazily in front of the PC and do online shopping.

Just like the "B8lich", other shops in Rodenkirchen had to close because there was no walk-in customer. Also closed: the whiskey depot and the "Rust men's fashion". The Rust couple have been running this fashion shop for over 20 years! Many residential and commercial buildings are also empty in the center and in the Sommershof. These are now only seen as investment properties and are not really rented out again. The main thing is that the money has certainly been put into material values, the international company seems to have thought what made the purchases.

However, the small trade in Rodenkirchen is not yet completely lost, because in this Veedel many shops from the trade are still active : flower shops, lingerie shops, small electrical shops, tea, clothing stores, delicatessen, jewelers with jewelry and or optics, sports shops or even kitchen shops can be found in Rodenkirchen. It should stay that way: so keep shopping locally!
