North West borders Humboldt / Gremberg, North East Gremberghoven , East Ensen forms the border and South the Rhine is the border. The federal highway 4 and Poll form the border northwest. The district Rodenkirchen is in the south.

History

Finds from human existence date back to the younger Stone Age. Around the 3rd millennium BC BC was home to the Rössen culture. A small bowl in a brick pit attested to this. Wide recesses on the bowl in horizontal rows are a characteristic of this period. The Mechelsberg culture can also be demonstrated. Ceramic pieces were found in the district . The Latene period (190 BC to the birth of Christ) can also be proven by finds. In 1938 traces of these were examined here. There were three sites in an area of ​​1100 m². The finds were found in the floodplain. Stone packs, shards and post holes were some finds here. A Roman settlement must have existed in the area until the 2nd century AD. The Carolingian period can also be demonstrated here. The fragments of a relief ribbon urn were found here.

Fake Certificate

Westhofen is cited for the first time in 922. It is strange that the certificate was forged . It was a document for the Monastery of the Holy Virgin. Today this is the St. Ursula. The Westhoven estate gave tithing to the Deutz Abbey by Archbishop Heribert of Cologne. Archbishop Hermann II awarded the abbey courtyard in 1041. The Nicholas Chapel was built in 1100. Westhoven was part of the Duchy of Berg in the Middle Ages. In 1784 there was flooding and the place was flooded. In the course of the French Revolutionary Wars, Westhoven was razed to the ground. Only the St. Nicholas chapel got away safely. The then 180 inhabitants fled. The Grand Duchy of Berg was founded in 1806. Westhoven came to the Rhine department.

In 1815 the district belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia. From 1929 to Porz and from 1932 to the Rheinisch-Bergisch district. In 1920 there was another major flood and a dyke system was planned. Until 1926, however, only the inhabited area was protected. A flood protection wall was built. The "Mudra barracks" was built in 1936. In 1944 it was badly damaged. Until 1949, the barracks was an emergency shelter for refugees and bombed out victims. Belgian troops moved in from 1951 to 1965. In 1974 they took over the Bundeswehr. A large residential park was built in 1973 and 1975. The Gerling Group built the residential park with 16 floors. 573 apartments are housed here. The barracks "Adjt. Brasseur" was occupied by the Belgian military until 1995. From 2011 onwards, the area was transformed into a water protection zone.

Monuments in Westhoven

The Nikolaus chapel was inaugurated in 1128 by the Benedictine abbey of St. Heribert. The chapel is dedicated to Nicholas of Myra, patron saint of boatmen. In 1128 she was granted the right of burial. This was a relief for the residents of the Westhoven farm. The church in Deutz was very far away. The cemetery was used until 1929. The chapel has a small, Romanesque hall. This was restored from 1959 to 1964. The Engelshof manor was built in 1880. Today the civic center is located there and has been owned by the city of Cologne since 1920. Management ended in 1971. In 1976 the farm was renovated. Concerts and other events take place in the community center. The intermediate plant IXa. lies in the "Westhovener Aue". Fort IX is one of them.

Commercial

During the First World War the Mannesmann-Mulag-Werke was established in Westhoven. Cars were built there. The "bollard giant" was also made there. It is an unfinished trans-ocean plane. The Massey-Harris company took over the factory in 1927. 600 employees produced agricultural machinery here from 1929. The plant was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. After the war, production was resumed with 150 employees. The delivery took place worldwide. Self-propelled combine harvesters were delivered in Germany. The Stollwerck plant also settled in Westhoven. In 1993 the street where the company is located was renamed Stollwerckstraße. Citroen Germany was based on Andre-Citroen-Strasse until 2013. After that, it was rebuilt. Housing, social facilities and student dormitories were built. The Dom brewery is located on Charlottenstrasse.

The Federal Office for Personnel Management of the Bundeswehr has been located in the Mudra barracks since 2013. In 2009, a penal system clinic went into operation. The new building caused unrest in the population. 35,000 signatures against the clinic were collected. The initiative and the citizens' association Ensen-Westhoven were then appointed to the planning advisory board and the clinic advisory board. There is critical participation. The relocation of the site, which was demanded by the citizens, failed. The Westhoven waterworks, which was built in the Art Nouveau style and is a listed building, promotes drinking water. The water gets 10% bank filtrate from the Rhine. Rhein Energie is the current operator.

Westhuenener Aue

The Westhovener Aue has an area of approx. 70 ha. It has been designated as a flood plain since 2005. The area was used as a military training area after the war. The paths must not be entered. Remnants of weapons may still be on the barracks area. 2000 trees were planted on the site. Meadows were also created. The area has only been open to the public for a few years.
