History

Where Poll got its name from has not been proven. However, it is assumed that the name derives from Polder (Dutch) or also from Pöhl (Pfuhl) . Pöhl is more obvious, since there were pools near Poll. A derivation of the name from Boll (hill) is also conceivable. The hill "Auf dem Sandberg" protruded from the flooded area.

First evidence

Settlements can be traced back to the Neolithic period. Finds of "shards with deep engraving" were found in Porz-Westhoven. The first documentary mention was made in 1003. Fishermen from Poll leased Fichereigerchtsame, a right of use to certain waters, from the Cologne Archbishopric. For many centuries, the bollards provided agricultural products such as milk or fish. The bollard Mayfish stood out here in particular. It is a type of herring. It was only in 1938 that fishing in Poll was stopped.

Significant for Cologne

There was a long danger of a breakthrough of the Rhine in the Poll area. From 1200 onwards dams were created. These were repeatedly destroyed by the floods of the Rhine. From 1400 the dams were strengthened. In 1477 there was a great flood. In 1479 the dams were then removed. The so-called bollard heads ensured Cologne's importance as a port city.

Bridges and ferries

The Flying Bridge is the first documented connection over the Rhine in Poll. Poll had several ferries. There were also rowing boat connections from Westhoven to Poll. Also from Poll to Cologne. At the Bollard Fisherman's House , a former restaurant, there was a pier. The south bridge was built from 1906 to 1910. The Rodenkirchen motorway bridge from 1938 to 1941.

Living

The settlement "An den Maien" was built in 1923/24. The "Baumgarten / Im Forst" settlement was built in the 1930s. The "Milchmädchensiedlung" settlement was built between 1955 and 1957. The "Raabstraße / Laurenz-Kiesgen-Straße" settlement was added in 1960/62. In 2007 a settlement with a car-free zone was built.

Town center

The center of the town is the market square on Siegburger Straße. Many events take place on the market square. The bollard Maifest is very well known.

Culture

Until the 20th century there were many inns with dance halls in Poll. The restaurant "Zum Jägerhof" was transformed into a local museum in 1914. Glass pictures come from the Cologne painter Ludwig Preckel. These were long lost. Local historian Hans Burgwinkel is their owner today. It maintains the tradition of the local museum. There are also picture exhibitions. Cultural events are held in the community center and in the "Alt Poller Wirtshaus" inn.

On the Rhine

A flood protection wall was built between the Rodenkirchen motorway bridge and the south bridge. This ensures that Poll is protected up to a water level of 11.9 meters. A campsite is located next to the DLRG house. The Wiesenhaus is a restaurant with an associated campsite. The Bollard Fisherman's House is a restaurant from 1910. The Cologneers loved the inn for its tasty fish dishes. The famous Cologne Max Wallraf or Albert Freiherr von Oppenheim were once guests of the inn.

In 1938 the restaurant was demolished. The inn was rebuilt twice. But it could no longer follow its heyday. However, the inn has been a popular destination again since 2012. In the event of strong floods, however, it is completely under water. The rowing and tennis club "Germania eV" had his boathouse on the bollard Rheinwiesen since 1914. However, it was destroyed in the Second World War. In 1964 the reconstruction was completed.

Bollard heads

Colloquially, the "bollard meadows" refer to the entire bank of the Rhine between Molenkopf and the Rodenkirchener Brücke. The bollard meadows were included in the soil monument list in 2005 (medieval bank fortifications "bollards heads"). The bollard meadows are used for many things. Children fly their kites in summer. There is also a barbecue. Some football and tennis courts are also here.
