Transport connections from Sürth

The connection with public transport (Cologne transport company) is quite good. For example, tram lines number 16 and 17 and bus lines 130 and 131 (all KVB) go to Sürth.

Geographical location

Sürth is also very south and administratively belongs to the district of Rodenkirchen. Sürth is located directly on the banks of the Cologne Rhine and has the following neighboring districts: Hahnwald , Godorf , Weiss and Rodenkirchen . Zündorf and Langel are on the other side of the Rhine.

History

First mentioned as Soretha and previously used as a place for agriculture, fishing and wine growing, Sürth developed into a location for modern mechanical engineering. With the foundation and construction of the Sürther machine factory "Hammerschmidt & Wescher" many jobs were created. Then, from the 20th century, the construction of some colonies of villas and beautiful single-family houses followed. There is also a beautiful country house colony, which the architect Max Stirn planned and built. The "Cologne Wax Factory" is also worth mentioning. Today, however, it serves local artists and graphic artists as living, working and exhibition space.

New school is emerging on the Sürhter field!

The foundation stone has been laid for the largest school center in Cologne. The giant school is said to cost around 31 million euros and to bear the name "Ernst Moritz Arndt Elementary School (EMA)". The school center consists of an "Open School Cologne", a primary school (integrative) for about 500 students and a private comprehensive school for about 365 students.

Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker emphasizes that "Education in Cologne is now a top priority". Around 275 million euros are to be invested in the expansion of the school system this year, which means a doubling of the investment amount compared to the previous year!

Only the name of the new school center meets with criticism, since the namesake is associated with National Socialism. Ernst Moritz Arndt was probably a writer and died in Bonn at the age of 90. He was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly.

Schildbürger or lamp strike

The Park and Ride car park in Sürth at the "Sürther Bahnhof" stop is a little criticized. Because there are actually around 40 lighting lanterns close together in a parking lot that is hardly used. The people of Suerth call the parking lot "Lantern Forest". The parking lot belongs to the Cologne public transport company and this has taken a stand. According to the KVB, "sufficient lighting must be provided on the entire parking lot for the purpose of ensuring traffic safety." It is of course questionable whether there should actually be 40 brand new LED lamps for around 600,000 euros and it is also questionable why these lamps also light up at night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., even though the parking lot is then closed ?!

Cologne's public transport authorities say that the car park is closed, but pedestrians can still enter it. And they shouldn't crash in the dark. Local politicians have gratefully received the topic and will surely solve the problem.

Trouble in the old wax factory

In the period from August 30th to September 1st, 2019 a big anniversary party was supposed to be held in the old wax factory, but the party was canceled. The reason is trouble between the landlord and the numerous tenants of the facility. Around half of all tenants have received a letter of termination from the landlord. A number of artists live and work in the facility, including around 24 studios. The rear part of the wax factory has now been given up, but is defending itself through a lawyer. Nobody wants to accept the termination so easily.

It is of course a lot of money because the landlord wants to increase the rent by around 40 percent and this is simply not affordable for many tenants. Since the tenants disagree, the landlord insists on an eviction suit. So there is a dispute and struggle between lawyers. Too bad.

Girls meeting in Sürth

Around 2,000 jecke women did a great job at the February 2019 Carnival! Not only was a lot of plastering done: 60 kilograms of cheese, 50 kilograms of spit roast, around 700 rolls, more than 200 kilograms of French fries, over 400 meatballs and more than 2,000 (!!!) liters of Kölsch were made by the ladies! No, they also celebrated without end for over five hours! The Suerth Carnival Association has put together a great program and spared no expense: Marita Köllner, Klüngelköpp, Räuber, Brings, Höhner, Kasalla, Cat Balou and the StattGarde Colonia Ahoj with band chapel are just a few of the names we want to mention here! The carnival tent shook and all "Wiever" were happy!
