History of Longerich
The residents of the district call Longerich in the dialect "Lunke" . At the time of the Cologne Carnival "Lunke Alaaf" is called. Lunke comes from Lunrike / Lunreke and is an abbreviation for -iacum. A reference to Roman times, of course. In Roman times there were road connections from Cologne to Neuss. It is therefore assumed that Longerich was already settled in Roman times. In the Middle Ages, it was first mentioned in a document after 900 Longerich. The church was first mentioned in 1080. But a church must have existed as early as 900. A church was built in 1797. This was a successor to a church and the tower of the old church was integrated into it. This church was demolished in 1913. The new building was previously built on the neighboring property.
In 1794, Longerich was under the French flag. From 1815 Longerich was Prussian. Large areas of what is now the Nippes district belonged to Mairie de Longerich in the French period. The Mayor's Office of Longerich developed from this. Nippes, Mauenheim and Riehl were separated from Longerich in 1886 and split off. From April 1, 1888, Longerich belonged to. In the course of the new building of the church on the neighboring property, a war memorial was created on the old church square. As a souvenir for all those killed in the wars of the last century. The place is called Kriegerplatz and has a park. Longerich had suffered serious damage during the Second World War . From 1956 Longerich grew steadily. The New Garden City was built.

The New Garden City: In 1956 for the Catholic Day in Cologne, the foundation stone was laid for the "Catholic Day Settlement". Catholic families with many children should be settled here. The area was previously mainly used for agriculture. The district president of Cologne, Dr. Wilhelm Warsch broke ground. Archbishop of Cologne Josef Cardinal Frings inaugurated the settlement on September 12, 1959. It should be mentioned that this settlement was once one of the largest in Europe with children. In 1961, the Catholic parish church of St. Bernhard and the Protestant Immanuelkirche were built. In 2008 the St. Bernhard Church reopened.
