Fewo Cologne introduces: Volkhoven / Weiler

In Volkhoven / Weiler live about 1397 inhabitants per km². The population is estimated at around 6082. Volkhofen / Weiler have a total area of 4,353 km². The incorporation of Volkhofen took place on April 1, 1888. Weiler followed much later, on April 1, 1922. The two districts belong to the Chorweiler district.

The location

Volkhoven / Weiler is located on the left bank of the Rhine in the north of Cologne. The immediate neighbors of the districts are next to Roggendorf / Thenhoven, Blumenberg , Chorweiler , Heimersdorf , also Lindweiler and Esch / Auweiler.

History of the neighborhoods

The two districts emerged from two tiny villages. In the 20th century, the villages grew together and merged into one. Volkhoven was more south-facing. During the French occupation, Volkhofen belonged to the canton of Weiden. In 1888 it was incorporated into the Mayor's Office of Longerich. Weiler is on the north side and at that time belonged to the Mayor's Office of Worringen. It was incorporated later, in 1922. Volkhoven and Weiler have large farmsteads that still exist today. The Bürgershof and the Georgshof are still preserved. Weiler also has the church built in 1766 in the town center. In the 1920s, a small settlement emerged in the middle between the two villages. In 1925 a new parish church was built here. St. Cosmas and Damian was called the church.

The waterworks

In the same year a new waterworks was built. It originated in a forest area. This waterworks still serves a large part of Cologne's residents on the left bank of the Rhine to supply drinking water. The Pulheimer Bach fills up the water body of the groundwater. There is a nature reserve three kilometers away. The creek also insures here. The drinking water is of good quality . The water protection area is connected to the Ville via a nature trail of the Pulheimer Bach. There is also a connection with the Rhineland Nature Park. Unfortunately, Volkhoven was assassinated in 1964. The gunman was an early retiree who felt that the authorities had treated him unfairly. He was robbed in his old school. There were eleven deaths, including two teachers and children.

The traffic connection

Volkhofen / Weiler was then pushed back in importance in the 1970s. The newly built satellite town of Chorweiler came more into focus. This made the traffic better. A highway feeder was built to the south. The four-lane access road is in the east and goes directly past Volkhofen / Weiler. An S-Bahn line was also built next to the motorway feeder. Cologne Central Station is only 15 minutes away by S 6 trains. Line 11 runs from the other direction via Dormagen and Neuss to Düsseldorf. In the west there is the Cologne-Neuss railway line to Krefeld. The railway line has been in existence for over 150 years. There was also a stop in Weiler. But this has not been operational for a long time. A large cemetery was built at the end of the 1960s. It was built for the districts of Seeberg, Heimersdorf, Chorweiler, Blumenberg and Lindweiler.

Public institutions in the city districts

The district of Chorweiler has only one professional fire station. This is on the outskirts. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has a building in the north. Volkhoven has a high school. It is the only one in the entire satellite city.

The simultaneous hall was built on the former school yard of the village school. The former school was quickly closed after the assassination attempt. The hall for the planned new building of the Museum Ludwig was built in the 1970s. It should be tried how the incidence of light works for the pictures of the museum. It was an attempt. Leisure time

In June 2008, Weiler got a new park. The generation park was opened here. The citizens' association Cologne-Volkhoven-Weiler was the founder.
