The location of Cologne Vogelsang
Vogelsang is located in the following districts: Müngersdorf , Widdersdorf , Bickendorf and Bocklemünd / Mengenich. Vogelsang is located in the west of our beautiful Colonia.
Apartment Cologne Tip
In Vogelsang, the so-called Kappesroll always takes place as part of a street festival (Siedlerfest). Kappes stands for cabbages! Then cabbages are rolled around the market place! Just have a look!
The story of Vogelsang
In the years from 1920 there was a small lack of living space in the course of industrialization in Cologne. At the same time, unemployment rose due to the global economic crisis . Some parts of the city or entire cities became impoverished. In order to counteract this, the government at that time decided to introduce a new settlement. It got a negative name: outskirts of the city and even the unemployed! Unemployed people and large families with many children should settle in these settlements or were preferred in this context. The inhabitants of such settlements should be able to carry out a certain type of self-sufficiency through animal husbandry and vegetable growing. The whole measure went back to agriculture, since industry was in crisis. Vogelsang was one of those neighborhoods!
Structure of the district
The first plans provided for the construction of pure single-family houses in Vogelsang. However, as more and more workers came to Vogelsang, more and cheaper housing had to be created urgently. So large apartment buildings with the apartment type "Volkswohnung" were built in Vogelsang. The district center is still the parish church of St. Konrad, an inn and a school.

Buildings and structures in Vogelsang
In Vogelsang there are some churches and even a large research facility. The following buildings are classified as worth seeing:
- Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research
- Evangelical Emmau Church
- St. Viktor Catholic Church
- Catholic parish church of St. Konrad
Not really buildings, but these are important places or attractions.
Report on the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (Germany, Cologne)
The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) is a research facility based in Cologne in the field of molecular plant biology. Scientific research employs around 350 people. In addition to the cultivation of useful plants, environmentally friendly crop protection is of great importance .
Scientific assignment for breeding
The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) carries out basic molecular biological research on plants. The scientists in Cologne are concerned with improving conventional breeding methods and developing environmentally friendly strategies for crop protection in crops. The scientists focus primarily on plant evolution, genetic components and interactions with the environment. Relevant questions regarding the plant immune system in plant pests are raised. This includes the time of flowering and the adaptation to special environmental influences. The result is innovative contributions to plant breeding.
History of the research institute
An institute founded by the former Kaiser Wilhelm Society in 1927, east of Berlin, was given the task of carrying out breeding research to promote science. The Max Planck Society has been the sponsor of the facility since 1948. It received the name Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research. In 1956, the institute was set up on the Vogelsang estate in Cologne. The focus of the scientific work was placed on basic research. The team's experts tried to decipher the cell and tissue details of higher plants. The focus of the work was primarily on basic molecular genetic research. The inclusion of molecular plant biology in the cultivation of useful plants became very important.
Scientific departments at the Max Planck Institute
Research has four scientific departments. Under the leadership of Paul Schulze-Lefert, the Molecular Phytopathology unit is trying to find out how plants react to microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi and what defense they develop against diseases. In doing so, the scientists take the molecular mechanisms into account when processing signals in the thale cress model (Arabidopsis thaliana) and other selected crops.
The Molecular Plant Genetics division headed by Heinz Saedler is dedicated to the molecular analysis of evolutionary processes. The researchers want to find out which genetic processes influence flower formation in crops. At the center of the analysis is the influence of important proteins, which act as transcription factors.
The Department of Plant Biology is headed by George Coupland. Here the transmission of the signals from the environment is examined with regard to the influence on the time of flowering. Mechanisms of great interest are those which enable the plants to perceive differences in the length of the day and to develop the flowers accordingly in response. The thale cress and other plant species serve as model organisms. The general topic of the Plant Breeding and Genetics department headed by Maarten Koornneef is the analysis of the genetic variability in model and crop plants. The researchers take properties such as dormancy, branching of the leaves and disease resistance into account.
In 2001 the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) was established. The doctoral program in English is aimed at interested students with the aim of promoting trend-setting new research. There is also the possibility of an individual doctorate from the directors and heads of research groups.
Science barn (WiS) in the Belvedere Landscape Park
Every cell of higher organisms has a cell nucleus. The genome is encoded here. While the genetic material can be read directly from the bacteria, the DNA of higher organisms is not available. For this reason, some processes require a large number of helper complexes, which should enable access to the DNS. Active protein complexes can systematically help to decode the relevant genes. The individual sections of the genome can be analyzed and evaluated in this way.
Interested visitors have ample opportunity to relax and discover the research work. The entire spectrum of research can be experienced in the Science Barn (WiS) in the Belvedere Landscape Park. It starts with the DNA molecule and extends to the cultivation of new crops. Access to the science barn is possible for visitor groups.

Traffic
Vogelsang is easy to reach by public transport. There are the stops "Bocklemünd" and "Köln Vogelsang, Westfriedhof" with the tram number 3 and 4 and the bus lines 141 and 143. You can also get to the town quickly via the military ring road.
Known shopping opportunities
A well-known and large garden center has settled in Ort. It is the Dinger´s garden center. Also the Dutch plant market.
Party
In Vogelsang there is also a large, well-known large disco from Cologne. It is the "Halle Tor 2".
Guest houses and apartments in Cologne Vogelsang
We even found one or two apartments in Vogelsang . These are probably mainly booked by mechanics, so you could perhaps call them a mechanic's apartment. Hotels Cologne-Vogelsang are actually not really needed. Cologne tourists prefer to book in the city center! Close to Cologne Cathedral! Close to the old town and the many pubs and restaurants there. We recommend the holiday flats from Ferienwohnung-Koeln.com ! Welcome to the Rhine metropolis!
