History

Finkenberg is a large housing estate and was built in the late 1960s. To this day, the area is known by porcelain as a "demo area". The settlement should enable "human-friendly living". On August 25, 2007, Finkenberg was added as the 86th district of Cologne.

On the other hand, there are rental apartment blocks with up to twenty floors in the south. There the facades are weathered and partly damaged. Stairwells, elevators, garages, cellars, sports and leisure facilities and also the free spaces between the blocks have abuses. Neglect to vandalism prevails there. There is a separate S-Bahn station that can reach the cathedral in ten minutes.

Some owners do not comply with the duties of care, order and cleanliness. You can see that both inside and outside the residential complex. In 2012 a tenant initiative was formed. Gross defects in the apartments and excessive rents are among her concerns . The WDR once tried to find out something about the owners of the high-rise buildings and came across a nested owner concept behind which there was certainly only one idea: to disguise and increase the tenants. The skyscrapers of Finkenberg are a safe source of income, since almost all of the rents are paid by the office ! The pedestrian zone was renovated and upgraded in 2013.

Social focus in Finkenberg

Certain population groups are particularly strongly represented here. These are low-income households, large families, unemployed people and people with a migration background. Youth unemployment is also very high. The same applies to juvenile delinquency. In 2004 there was a controversial series of articles that ended in disgrace. However, this only pushed those affected further to the margins of society. Unfortunately, crime in Finkenberg often starts from young migrants.
