Geographical location

Urbach is located on a side arm of the Rhine river. The federal highway 59 on Grengel forms the eastern border. The southern border is Elsdorf on Friedrich-Hirsch-Straße and Friedensstraße. To the west, Porz borders Urbach. The northern border is Eil .

History

It is believed that the name developed from the word Urbich . Urbich is derived from the Old High German word for "old brook". Since Urbach is close to an old arm of the Rhine, this can be assumed. Until around 1950 there were still wetlands in Urbach, such as the Bungert. The first church was built around 1100. It served as a place of worship for the first settlers. The village was built because there was a crossroads on the Deutz-Urbach-Altenrath-Bergisches Land and Heumar-Eil-Urbach-Wahn-Troisdorf-Siegburg highways.

The first mentioned are only partially recognizable today. For example in Poll the Siegburger Straße, in Ensen the Urbacher Weg, in Porz the Deutzer Weg or in Urbach the Kaiserstraße and the Waldstraße. A magnolia tree stood near the restaurant with its own dance hall. The inn was at the crossroads. The magnolia tree was also known beyond the village borders for its abundant flowering.

Many courtyards

The parish church of St. Bartholomew and several large courtyards were built in the east of the bank height . For example the Kirchenhof, Leuschhof, Zehnthof or also the Maarhof. In the west along the flat bank area, the Sternenberger Hof and the Wiedenhof were built. The school was also built near the Wiedenhof. North of the intersection (on the way to Cologne - today Kaiserstrasse) was an extension that had the character of a market place. To the south was a fruit tree garden, which belonged to the parish of Bungert. The Rhine arm was also built on over time. The former Bungert now has a green area with a children's playground.

At the south end there is a war memorial . This was initiated by Johann Barz, the main teacher from Urbach. The Cologne architect Ludwig Paffendorf developed it. The monument was completed in 1934. The villages of Porz, Eil and Elsdorf also used the Urbach church as their center of the parish.

The administration

Urbach used to belong to the Porz office in the Duchy of Berg. The surrounding villages were always politically closely interwoven. The Grand Duchy of Berg was established in 1806. The administration was then restructured in 1808. The administration was set up according to the French model. In 1808 Urbach came to the Rhine department. In 1815 Urbach came to Prussia and was incorporated into the Heumar Mayor's Office. The river Rhine was used as a traffic artery and transport route as industrialization progressed. Porz-Urbach became a new industrial district. A train station was built. The Cologne-Niederlahnstein line was created.

The former station is now called Porz-Rhein. In 1929, Heumar and Wahn merged. The large community of Porz am Rhein was created. City rights were conferred in 1951 . The incorporation or local reorganization came about in 1975. Urbach is now a pure residential area. The traffic situation is still favorable. Urbach grew together with the former neighboring villages into an urban unit.

Maarhof estate

It is a closed, four-wing courtyard. Maarhof is located on Frankfurter Straße in Porz-Urbach. The manor house consists of two floors with a stucco facade (1896). The farm buildings are brick buildings. In 1623 the Maarhof was first mentioned in a document. The manor has a listed status. This has existed since 1982. The courtyard was restored in 1985 and there was a topping-out ceremony. There are 23 apartments in the immediate vicinity of the historic residential complex.
