The story

The place was first mentioned in writing in October 980. Farmers lived in Ossendorf over 5000 years ago. Among other things, the "Gut Frohnhof" and the "Gut Pisdorhof". By the way, an old knight family from the 12th century is the namesake of our well-known district. This was called "von Ossendorp". After there have been some variations of the name:

  1. Ossindorp
  2. Ockindorp
  3. Oyssindorp

and the like. There was even a large sugar beet factory in town. It was the factory of the "Carl Joest & Sons" company.

Report on Cologne-Butzweilerhof Airport (Germany)

The airport is located in today's Cologne Ossendorf district . The name Butzweilerhof today stands for a commercial area. The airport museum also bears this name. The “Potzweyler” farm used to be located at this location. It was built in 1230. Since then, the area has always been used for agriculture.

history

Cologne-Butzweilerhof Airport was built in 1911. It is considered the first airport in Cologne to be used for civil aviation. Shortly after its construction, the space was mainly used for air traffic. Jean Hugot initially used the space for his first flight attempts. He managed to keep his flying machine in the air for a short time. As a result, new flight attempts were made again and again. In the event of an incident, Hugot also had to leave a burning machine. In 1912 the "Imperial Air Station and Flight School" was officially opened on the site. The city finally handed the airfield over to the military administration. Then a first runway was built. It had a 256 m long track. A short time later, many people were enthusiastic about aviation at the “Flugtag zu Cöln” on June 29, 1912.

The military use was finally implemented in September 1912 by the construction of an aircraft yard, a motor vehicle hangar, four self-supporting aircraft hangars, two underground fuel systems and a brake stand. On April 1, 1913, the former airfield in a field officially became the "Fliegerstation Cölln Butzweilerhof". 1915 was followed by the training of flight observers, who took on a similar task as today's air traffic controllers. Finally, on January 28, 1917, the “Aviation Observer School Cologne” also moved in.

The First World War

After the First World War the airfield was occupied by British occupying forces until 1926. On 1 February 1926, the Lufthansa Junkers G 34 landed again at the airport. The site was then expanded and finally released on May 16, 1926 for civil aviation. Now people could use the airport for travel. Lufthansa also started operations at the airport on April 6, 1926 on the Berlin-Cologne-Paris route. This year, 24 take-offs and landings were recorded every day. By 1930 the number had doubled. Over time, the airport developed into the air hub of the west. In 1935 a further expansion was also decided. The building, which was planned by Hans Mehrtens, was ready just a year later. The new reception building was inaugurated at a large opening ceremony.

In the course of the Second World War, the entire site was confiscated by the German military. Military use continued after the war. Until 1957, civil and sport aviation use was also recorded. However, Cologne-Bonn Airport was opened in the Cologne-Wahn district on July 18, 1957. From this point on, the airport had lost its function . In 1960 the World Gliding Championship finally took place. On September 30, 1980, the closure of the airfield was finally planned. The tower was dismantled a year later. The area has not been used by the Bundeswehr since 1995.

Cologne-Butzweilerhof Airport today

The reception building of the airport is now a listed building . On the one hand, it is considered a symbol of National Socialism due to its construction and, on the other hand, it is a reminder of the once important Cologne airport. The building has been restored for the second time. After the closure, the site is used again and again for events. On November 15, 1980, Pope John Paul II held his Holy Mass on the unused site. In 1996 and 1999 the Bizarre Festival took place at the location of the former airport. In 1997 a U2 concert took place on the premises . The basic features of the airport still exist today. However, usage has changed. An airplane can no longer be found on the tarmac. However, the boards and the lobby itself are reminiscent of the former use.

Traffic

Tram line 5 also goes to the "Old Airport" or "IKEA Butzweilerhof" stops. By car you can easily get to the military ring road or the A57 motorway.
