Geography

The district used to be on a swamp. The highest elevation is 57 meters. The district borders east and southeast on Ostheim . The district Humboldt Gremberg forms the border to the southwest. Lime borders west on Vingst . In the north it borders on Höhenberg and there is no visible structural separation here.

History

A first mention is known from a deed of gift from Archbishop Heribert to Deutz Abbey from 1003. Vinhem it was called . But it can be assumed that it was already inhabited in Roman times. The name probably comes from "vinitor", which means winemaker. Vingst used to be rural with today's Heßhofplatz as the center. The Höfe Judenhof, Unkelshof, Gremberger Hof and the Vingster Hof belonged to the Deutz Abbey. Vingst used to have its own mayor's office in Gremberg. In the Wilhelminian era, a number of residential houses were built. The proximity to lime with its industry also attracted many workers to Vingst. Because there was a direct train connection. After the Second World War with serious destruction, new living space was needed.

From 1947 to 1948, many structures were built in layers. These houses were later used by guest workers . The Swedish settlement was later built. It is called the parrot settlement because the houses are brightly painted. The settlement of Vingst followed. Vingst became a suburb of the workers. Some areas became a social focus after the recession. The settlement of Marbergweg / Auf dem Kitzeberg was built in the southeast in the 1960s. Double and row houses were built. In 1965 the Paul-Gerhardt-Haus community center was built for the Evangelicals.

Economy and infrastructure

There are the schools GGS Lustheider Straße, Heinzelmännchen-Schule, Montessori Grundschule, the Katharina-Henoth-Gesamtschule and the GHS Nürnberger Straße. The business center of Vingst is at the intersection of Kuthstraße and Ostheimer Straße.

Infrastructure

The A 4 and A 559 motorways can be reached via the Vingster Ring. Cologne Central Station is eight kilometers away. Cologne / Bonn Airport is ten kilometers away.

Neighborhood Renewal

Rehabilitation measures were started in the 1980s. The transition houses were renovated. They got new facades. Then the Vingst II settlement was renovated. The building structure was very bad. Therefore a large part was torn down. New buildings were built for this. The tenants had to move to the Vingst I settlement during the construction work. When the settlement Vingst II was completed, there was a dispute. Vingst I was listed. It was only through a compromise in 2002 that an agreement could be reached. The monument protection was canceled. The houses on Nobelstrasse were demolished. New buildings came there. However, the architectural style was similar. However, new balconies were a decisive visual change. Citizens' initiatives to beautify the district were created. In 2007 45,000 daffodils were planted in the green areas .

Religions

The Catholics lead with 30.5%. 10.7% are Protestant. The remaining residents are non-denominational or have other religions.

The St. Theodor parish with the church of the same name became the parish of St. Theodor and St. Elisabeth in 2001 with the parish of St. Elisabeth. The pastor is Franz Meurer. There is the Church of the Redeemer for the Protestant community. For the Muslims there is the Vingster Mosque. The Church of St. Theodor is one of the most modern churches in Cologne. There was an earthquake in 1992. The church was so damaged that it was demolished . Only the tower remained. The new church, designed by Paul Böhm, was inaugurated in 2002. Pastor Meurer founded a social network for the socially disadvantaged. There is a clothing store and a grocery store. The senior residence "An St. Theodor" is in the neighborhood. The Evangelical Church was built in 1957. There is space for 300 people. The church also has a kindergarten and a youth facility, the "Blockhaus".

Entertainment

Vingst has large green areas. These were once created in the Cologne fortress ring. To the south is the Gremberger Wäldchen . The Fort X green area is to the east. The Merheimer Heide offers recreation seekers in the north leisure opportunities. There is a natural outdoor pool on the Vingster Ring. It is also called Vingster excavation hole. It is a 2.21 hectare lake. The allotment garden association Cologne-Vingst e. V. has existed since 1923. The SSV Vingst 05 association has a football department and a tennis department. The Vingster fair takes place on the second weekend in October. The carnival procession is organized by the Vingster KG Fidele Vingster .
