Ostheim is located in the east of Cologne in the Kalk district. Ostheim was a small place until the 19th century. As part of the industrialization of Kalk and Mülheim , many workers also moved to residential areas in Ostheim. The population increased rapidly between 1950 and 1980. Unfortunately, the district developed into a social focus .

Geography

There used to be marshes in the area. The highest elevation is the Vingster Berg. After many houses were destroyed in the Second World War, the rubble is poured into a heap. This is how the 64 meter high Vingster Berg was created.

History

1147 says that Pope Eugene II of the Abbey Deutz confirmed the countries and properties. The certificate mentions the homestead Oestheim. It can be assumed that the origin of the name comes from the situation in the east. Other opinions believe that the situation in the east to the Maarberg goes back to that. The Servatius chapel was built in the 18th century.

Construction of a settlement began in the 1970s. Apartments for around 2500 people were planned. The district was built with many high-rise buildings on Gernsheimer Strasse. But there has been a high unemployment rate over time. This also led to the neglect of this residential area. This district with high-rise buildings developed into a social focus. Therefore, social workers, street workers, were also used.

Saar settlement, Baden district / Bergstrasse district

At the beginning of the 1930s, new one- and two-family houses were built. The settlement was built around Saarbrücker Straße. At the time, this new housing project was the first structured residential project in Ostheim.

The Humboldt settlement

The Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz company built 15 barracks south of Ostheim for forced laborers. The barracks were built in the 1940s. The simple barracks each had an area of approximately 230 m². After 1944, the barracks were divided into three plots. In this way, employees whose apartments and houses were bombed out were given accommodation.

Buchheimer Weg settlement

Between 1954 and 1958, a residential area was built by the non-profit housing association on Buchheimer Weg, Grevenstraße and Servatiusstraße. 1037 apartments were created, which were up to eight floors high. 99 apartment buildings were built in this way. Shops and a community wash house were also located in this settlement.

Settlement on Gernsheimer Straße

At the beginning of the 1970s, a residential area for 2500 people was built on a former parade ground. There were partial grants, some were sold as condominiums. Some of the skyscrapers also had up to 14 floors . At the time, this settlement was considered a prime example of modern "social housing". But this housing estate was visibly neglected as many tenants moved away.

The million field

The city of Cologne leased a 145,000 m² arable land in the 1960s . The farmer at that time was ready for sale. The city actually wanted to build an extension to the "Evangelical Hospital" Kalk and a senior residence there. However, this plan was not implemented. The farmer and his heirs received around 16 million euros in rent for the fallow land . This is how the name "Million Field" came into being for the area.

Business / Trade

The round building on Rösrather / Frankfurter Strasse was completed in 1996. A store row was built in 1976. This is located at the Sparkasse Cologne / Bonn. These are the center of the Ostheim district. There are a dozen retail stores there. Ostheim also has three supermarkets, two petrol stations and some specialty shops. The district also has ten innkeepers, a restaurant and a hotel. Around 1970, the construction of many Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz production facilities in the southeast of Ostheim was planned. The group then ran into financial difficulties. So the plan was discarded and the city of Cologne declared the area to be commercial. But only six small or medium-sized companies settled there.

Events

There is an annual move from association for the Ostheim carnival parade . This is held on Carnival Sunday. The traditional shooting festival takes place on the weekend after Pentecost. "Veedel eV" organizes the Ostheimer Bürgerfest "We are Ostheim".

milestone

In 1818, a full-mile obelisk was built. It is located on the corner of Bensheimer and Frankfurter Strasse and is made of trachyte rock. The distance to Cologne is from here a Prussian mile. A Prussian mile is exactly 7532.48 meters. Since the trachyte is soft rock, the obelisk is very weathered and needs renovation.
