Location of Zündorf

Zündorf is right on the Rhine river. It borders on Elsdorf and Wahn in the east, on Libur in the southeast, on Niederkassel-Ranzel in the south and southwest to Langel . The Rhine forms the western border. Opposite the Rhine side in the west there are the districts Weiß and Sürth . Zündorf used to consist of Nieder Zündorf and Ober Zündorf. 1259 with the Cologne stacking right came to flourish of Nieder Zündorf. There was a market square at the harbor, where many trading houses settled. In 1972 the market place was redesigned. It was raised towards the Rhine. He also got foundations for a mobile flood protection wall . In 2006 a further increase of 30 to 90 centimeters was made. The houses are protected up to a level of 10.70 meters.

The Groov

Groov is a recreation area. It used to be an arm of the Rhine that was separated from an island. This island was called Mittelwerth or Groov . As it was threatened with sanding, the island was connected to the shore in 1849 by building a dam. As a result, the island broadened. Ships were able to navigate the lower Rhine arm with a shallow draft until around 1950. Even today, this arm of the Rhine has a division with two lakes. The lakes are connected by sewer pipes. Since there was no fresh water supply, the lakes threatened to tip over.

Therefore, oxygen is led into the lower lake every summer. The upper lake in turn receives fresh well water regularly. There are rowing and pedal boats on the lake. A marina was built in the north of the Groov. There are also water sports clubs here. KrokoLino is a ferry that runs from Zündorf across the Rhine to the Weiß district. Many people looking for relaxation can be found here in summer. There is plenty of outside dining on the Groov.

History

There are finds that confirm a Roman presence. The old church of St. Martinus has a barrier fragment from the Carolingian period and tombstones from the 10th to 12th centuries. In 1008, Archbishop Heribert of Cologne transferred properties from Zündorf to the Deutz Abbey. It can be assumed that there were already two churches around 1155. Because there is a mention from the time of two pastors. Therefore there will have been a corresponding settlement. In 1806 Zündorf was part of the Duchy of Berg. In 1795 there was occupation of French troops . Zündorf then belonged to Mairie Wahn. In 1815 Zündorf fell to the Kingdom of Prussia in terms of administration. In 1875 Heumar moved to Porz. A town hall for the Heumar Mayor's Office was built in 1910. In 1928 the name was changed to Porz. In 1929 the district became part of the administration of the Wahn office. The town rights were granted to the municipality of Porz in 1951. The incorporation took place in 1975.

The stacking rights

When the city of Cologne was granted the stacking right in 1259, the merchants wanted to avoid this. Zündorf became a trading hub. In Zündorf the goods were loaded onto wagons. The further transport took place on land. If a merchant has been proven to circumvent stacking rights, this was associated with the expropriation of his goods. Zündorf became a wealthy area as a loading station. Cologne and the Duke of Berg were dependent on customs duties. The customs tower still reminds of it.

The defensive tower

The defense tower in Zündorf also used to be a residential tower. It probably dates from the 13th century. There was a fire, but the defense tower was renovated again in 1864 and served as a storage room. 1975 - 1980 the tower was rebuilt. Today the home club uses it. There is also an exhibition there.
