History

The district got its name from the composition of "Holler Weide" and "An der hohlen Weide". In 1910 the place name was introduced. The name was first mentioned in a document in 1222. It was about the former knight's seat at Castle Iddelsfeld, which still consists of a farm and a mill. The mill dates from the 18th to 19th centuries. The buildings of the Isenburg are also still preserved. The castle was first mentioned in 1364. The moated castle, on the other hand, is only partially preserved, such as the "Haus Schlagbaum".

This dates from the 16th century. In the village of Schweinheim, which was once the village center, there are still some historical houses. For example in the street "In der Hütte" and in "Schweinheimer Straße". The plague raged in the Middle Ages and the towns of Schweinheim and Wichheim were almost completely wiped out . There were only seven survivors in these places. With line G, Holweide was connected to the suburban railway in 1906.

Festival and fairground in Holweide

In 1995 there was development of the festival and fairground in Holweide . A large block of houses was built and this led to the end of the fun fair. This also meant that the annual "Craftsman and Performance Show" could no longer be held. Two new development areas were also built in 1997. The population in the district rose by about 2000 inhabitants. The federal road led through the district and this was a burden for the population in Holweide. The place is completely intersected by the federal road. There was also heavy truck traffic and no bypassing this heavy traffic.

The theater is the first professional theater in Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine. The Cassiopeia Theater is a figure theater and an author theater.

Catholic Church of the Assumption of Mary

The Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located at Schnellweider Straße 4. The church was built between 1926 and 1927. The plans for this came from the architect Stephan Mattar (1875 - 1943). The church building was a follow-up project to an emergency church that originated in the 19th century. The church has a three-aisled basilica, a transept, a tower and a two-story porch. The facades consist of clinker cladding and also stone decorations. The style of the church is a late historicism, but it was coupled with forms of expressionism.

There is also the Catholic Church of St. Anno.

Myths settlement

The fairytale settlement is only partially located in the district of Holweide. The other part of the settlement is in Cologne-Dellbrück. The settlement was built between 1922 and 1929. Manfred Faber (1879 - 1944) and Wilhelm Riphahn were the architects of the settlement. Manfred Faber was murdered in the concentration camp. 181 single-family houses were built for the settlement and the area is located on the land of the former Iddelsfeld estate. The houses of the settlement were intended to be rented for the residents.

Many street names refer to fairy tales and go back to an idea of "living like in a fairy tale". Street names such as "Siebenrabengasse" or "Drosselbartstraße" can be found here. The settlement is also an expression of the ideals of the "garden city movement" coming from England. They wanted to create enough living space for workers' families, which included a garden. Families should be able to grow vegetables or keep small animals. Almost all of the houses are listed.
