Location

Merheim borders Dellbrück in the northeast, Brück in the east and in the south Neubrück and southwest at Ostheim . Holweide forms the border in the north and Höhenberg in the west.

History

The name probably comes from Mar or Mer. This is how swampy areas were once called. Heim refers to an older rodeing period. In 1003 the first mention was made . At that time, Archbishop Heribert of Cologne donated three courtyards to Cologne's Peterstift and one of these courtyards was in the Merheim area.

In 1808 there was an administrative reform in the Rhineland, which was occupied by the French . The Porz office was dissolved and the Mairie Merheim, the mayor's office, came into being. In 1815 the district of Mülheim am Rhein was formed. Brück, Dellbrück, Höhenberg, Holweide, Ostheim, Rath, Dünnwald, Flittard, Höhenhaus and Stammheim belonged to the mayor's office. In 1813, French troops were given up in the area on the right bank of the Rhine. In 1815 the Rhine Province was formed, which was under the rule of the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1914 parts of the district of Mülheim together with the city of Mülheim were incorporated into the city of Cologne. The place became very wealthy because of free trade and the large customs area of Prussia.

In 1914 the mayor's office was dissolved because the incorporation took place. In 1952, Merheim on the left bank of the Rhine was renamed Weidenpesch due to frequent confusion.

Church of St. Gereon

The town center was around the St. Gereon church , where the mayor's office was also located. There was a large cattle market at the eastern end. In 1665 the market inn was built in a half-timbered style. It is the oldest restaurant on the right bank of the Rhine in Cologne. The inn has been called "Em ahle Kohberg" since 1937. The name was probably a strategic advertising idea for the host. The inn was named after a well-known line of text. It comes from the homeland song "Och wat wor dat fröher schön nevertheless en Colonia", when d'r Franz mem Nies nohm Ahle Kochberch jing. The Cologne suburban railway was built in 1906. So the district got its own stop. So there was a good traffic connection and this increased the attractiveness of Merheim. The Krauss machine factory and the company Schwarze were established here in 1910. From 1929 on, a landscape park was created, the Merheimer Heide. This was created on the former parade ground.

Today's A3, the Reichsautobahn at that time, was built in the 1930s. This reduced the size of this Merheim heath. However, the town center was still connected to the Merheimer Heide by bridges. To the north, the Schlagbaumsweg led from the settlement "Schlagbaumsweg" to Buchheim. The Olpener Straße with Höhenberg was south and in the middle the heather was connected to the town center by a wooden pedestrian bridge that led over the A 3. The town center shifted more to Olpener Strasse. The drug factory Dr. Madaus & Co settled after the Second World War. The old company premises in Radebeul / Saxony were expropriated by the Soviets. The Cologne-Merheim Clinic was established on the former Ostheim air base area. In the clinic there was a nationwide well-known cremation ward.

Clinic Merheim

There is a large clinic in Merheim.

The arms

The coat of arms has a red and silver shield. The tournament collar is blue and covered by a blue crossing. Here you can see a golden arm, which was put on with a sack sleeve. This holds a gold ring, which is placed on the left edge with the arm. The noblemen of Sponheim carry the coat of arms with a red and silver, shielded shield. The crossing with the arm was freely supplemented and thus reduced. This could mean that Johann was an illegitimate offspring of the Löwenberger. The Merheim History Association commissioned the coat of arms. The design was carried out by the heraldist Lothar Müller-Westphal.

Church

The St. Gereon church belonged to the Cologne Gereonsstift. Gravestones have been found that suggest a Merovingian church. The church was connected to the front courtyard. A Romanesque building was built in later times, and this was also expanded. The church collapsed in 1818 and was rebuilt again in 1821. In 1907 the church was redesigned by Heinrich Renard. Between 1996 and 1997 the Catholic Church was extensively renovated.
