History

Already from the Neolithic period the oldest finds for the Escher area can be found. Finds have been found on the eastern and western hills. These lie along the old arm of the Rhine. There are also numerous finds from the Roman period. The Roman ruins are in the Escher area. The sites are probably five small Villae rusticae . The farms were fenced. The mansion, stables, barns and servants' house were among them. These served to supply the residents of the provincial capital of Cologne.

The military was also taken care of. The agricultural products from the Villae rusticae were used for this. Roman underfloor heating was uncovered in the old village church of St. Martinus. They were discovered on the northern pillar. You can visit them today. There are glass panels that are walkable for this purpose. The first documentary mention comes from 989. The Cologne Archbishop Everger mentioned Ascha-Esch for the first time. Esch consisted of courtyards. The location of some of them has remained unchanged until today. Some are still managed.

Agriculture in Esch was of great importance for 900 years. Farmers, tenants, farm workers, or servants made their living from agriculture. The population structure changed with the onset of industrialization towards the end of the penultimate century. The city of Cologne grew tremendously. Esch already had close contacts with Cologne at the time of the documentary mention. Esch was influenced by Cologne . The Cologne monasteries and monasteries owned land, land and for the most part the people who lived there. The Groß St. Martin monastery was predominant here. The patricians of the city of Cologne invested their property in property. They acquired the property through trade and bought the surrounding area. Thus the landed gentry also emerged.

Roman Catholic parish

The Roman Catholic Church in Esch is called St. Martinus. The church dates from the Middle Ages and is the center of the town center. It was rebuilt and expanded several times. The oldest traces date from the 11th century. The hall church was raised in 1200. An extension was also created by a north aisle. A side aisle on the south side was added in the 13th century. A Romanesque square tower was also built. The 1990s brought Gothic redesigns to the church. Flower motifs were decorated on the vault. The old village church soon became too small because the place expanded. New settlements were created. A new church was built between 1967 and 1969. St. Mariä was built according to plans by the architect Hans Schilling. In 1997 the Martinushaus was added. It faces the new Catholic Church.

Escher See

The Esch district is located in the area of the former Rhine arm. High-quality sand and gravel were present in the bottom. The excavation caused some quarry ponds. In 2003 bathing was stopped. However, a private entrepreneur has operated an outdoor pool called Sundown Beach since 2007. Anglers also use the lake. There is also a circular hiking trail for walkers.

Auweiler

The history of Auweiler is linked to Esch. Esch was the neighboring village of Auweiler. The Fronhof Esch was given to the Groß St. Martin monastery in 989. Auweiler estates were probably one of them. Auweiler was first mentioned in 1312. The "arable and garden land" was then called "Ourwiler". A Hanerhof is mentioned in the Richenchronik 1638. This was in Auweiler. The Amt Hülchrath was responsible for Auweiler in the Middle Ages. It consisted of several main courses in the 18th century. Auweiler belonged to the main course Griesberg. The area consisted of farm settlements. The Esch parish probably had its main courtyard in Auweiler.

Auweiler and Esch were incorporated into the canton of Dormagen in the French era. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, the administration of Esch and Auweiler was divided. Esch then belonged to the Mayor's Office of Stommeln. Auweiler went to Pulheim. The city of Cologne has almost no areas without traffic lights or high-rise buildings. Auweiler is one of the few areas where neither is available. It is said that the open village square got its shape from the filling of ponds. A few large farmsteads with smaller houses are grouped around the square. However, the focus is on the Pohlhof. This is also widely known beyond the borders of Cologne. There is an inn with a beer garden in it. Auweiler maintains friendly neighborhood life with Esch. Traditions are held high and promoted with festivals and associations.
